Baptisms / Christenings

Baptism (Christening) is a special service where we welcome someone into the church family.  We would love you to consider baptising a child or coming as an adult to be baptised in one of our churches.

Both adults and children can be baptised. Adults will make their own promises to God. Parents and Godparents of children who are not old enough to make those promises make the promises on a child’s behalf.

Everyone in England lives within a Church of England parish and, as such, is eligible for baptism in the Church of England.

Baptism and thanksgiving services usually take place during a Sunday Morning Service at your chosen church. They are usually booked a few months in advance. The Service would last for about 45 minutes, and would include music, prayers, readings and a short sermon or refelction, as well as the baptism service itself. The family are able to select the readings and hymns they would like to include in the service, if they wish.

Alternatively a private baptism service can be held at a different time.

There is no charge for a baptism service.

Booking A Baptism Service

If you are thinking of having your child baptised, or of being baptised yourself please contact us via the Church Office.

Once you have contacted us we will arrange a time to meet with you to discuss the service and answer any questions you may have

Preparing for Baptism

Having your child baptised, or being their godparent, comes with responsibilities, as you are asked to make promises on their behalf to help them to grow up in the Christian faith. However, you are not expected to bear this responsibility alone: the Church community promises to help them too.

The Church of England hopes that, together, parents, godparents and the Church community will nurture the growing child so that in time they will want to make a commitment to the Christian faith themselves through confirmation.

Adult Baptism

You may have come to faith and be seeking to be baptised later in life. If so, we can help you to find out more about what it means to be baptised and confirmed as a full member of the Church as an adult.
